TLDR:
KDA clarifies that Mount Kenya University’s BSc Oral Health programme is not equivalent to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree. Only two universities are currently accredited to train dentists in Kenya.
The Kenya Dental Association wishes to inform members of the public that publications and communications issued by Mount Kenya University may be misleading prospective students by implying that the BSc Oral Health programme is equivalent to or constitutes training in the Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme.
Key Facts:
- BSc Oral Health ≠ BDS degree
- BSc Oral Health does not confer legal authority to practise dentistry in Kenya
- BSc Oral Health is not internationally recognised as a dental qualification
- Only the University of Nairobi and Moi University are accredited to train dentists in Kenya
Only holders of a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from an accredited institution, duly registered and licensed by KMPDC, are legally qualified to practise dentistry in the Republic of Kenya.
Public Advisory:
Exercise due diligence and seek clarification from relevant regulatory authorities before enrolling in any programme purported to lead to qualification or practice as a dentist.
