Description

The use of antibiotic agents is essential for eliminating microbial induced diseases in dentistry and overall. Antibiotic prescribing is a common routine practice by all practitioners. The key objective being to assist the body’s immune system to fight or eliminate sustained/increasing imbalances in the microbial flora. The correct selection and effective application of antimicrobials requires a good conceptualization and knowledge of the specific drugs. A significant growing problem globally is antimicrobial resistance partly due to improper use of antimicrobial agents. Additional knowledge is thus required to update practitioners to safely use the agents, to be knowledgeable on precise mechanism of action, formulations available, adverse and side effects as well as be cognizant of impacts on The global one health concept, we are one world. Objectives of this presentation include: a summary analogy of antimicrobial agents specifically bactericidal cell wall inhibitors, a recap of bacterial structure and function aligned to targeted action of antimicrobials, as well as microbial adaptations in resistance and the One health approach. Expected outcomes of this presentation is dental practitioners empowered on antimicrobials and agent synergy with the example of Co-Amoxiclav, reminded on bacterial activity (especially cell wall synthesis), microbial resistance, and being cognizant of the one health triad for safe and efficient antimicrobial use with additional conclusions.
